Post 61 / Hour 67: What Time is It?
By Dave Fox
Confusion and controversy have apparently rained down over flash humor writing contest number three, which is not good for my beleagured brain at this moment.
In contest two, I gave just a three-hour writing window. As a result, only one entry came in on time, with two late ones an hour later. So I announced contest three 24 hours in advance. I am now receiving e-mails asking me what time it is. And I have no clue.
I am in Singapore, where I’m typing this at 3:30 p.m. Monday Most of my audience is in North America, where it’s late Sunday night. My web designer is in England where it’s time for breakfast.
Time zones are crazy in general. There are 24 hours in a day, but something like 27 or 29 time zones. There are Asian countries, such as India, Sri Lanka, and Burma, and some places in the Middle East, which are off by 30 minutes. Then there are the Chatham Islands, a part of New Zealand that is off from the rest of New Zealand time by 45 minutes. I don’t know how this happened. Maybe they just oversleep a lot.
In any case, I want as many people as possible to be able to enter our final flash humor writing contest. So in an attempt to quell this chaos, here is a fancy plug-in telling you exactly how much time you have before the contest is over:
(If you don’t see anything below, it has probably already ended.)
