My Very First, Really Dumb Online Video Journal

By Dave Fox

Jim Higley looks a lot like me, except he doesn't get a maniacal look in his eyes when asked to smile for a photo.

When I was speaking at the Erma Bombeck Writers’ Workshop in Dayton, Ohio, a couple of months ago, I met Jim Higley, an author, video blogger, super nice guy, and creator of the website, BobbleheadDad.com. Jim taught a class on video blogging, in which he encouraged us to  let go of our perfectionism, shoot them in just one or two takes on our phone, and toss them online quickly. Jim says he has the process down to the point where he can shoot, edit, and upload a 90-second video in less than five minutes.

Inspired by Jim, I flew home to Singapore, where  I spent the next two months worrying about how I would shoot, edit, and upload my very first video diary.

I managed to shoot it in one and a half takes. I rambled for longer than I intended about my upcoming travel plans. And I almost broke some stuff. This is the end result — three minutes and 39 seconds of your life that you will never get back if you watch it.

Here it is!

(And here’s Jim Higley showing how to quickly shoot a video with your iPhone, edit it with the iMovie app, and fling it onto YouTube….)

OK, Dave, when is your life ever NOT chaotic?! You pack in a good amount of fun living into your chaos so all is well. Good for you for trying something new…now you know how your students feel when we send off our first pitiful drafts of humor writing!

Dear First Time Online Video Journalist,

Bravo on your first online video jump! Self deprecating, informative, and funny. Finally a real voice/and moving face to go with your written word.

Take care during your upcoming adventures — Beerfest sounds like a tough gig. Would write something witty about Laos, but depending on pronunciation, it only rhymes with things like cow, now, yow, or house.

Chaos becomes your lifestyle. Will tune in again.
