Norway’s Princess Patient with Popcorn Paparazzi

My appearance with Norway’s Princess Märtha Louise on Saturday went smoothly. I did not say anything stupid or hyperventilate. She told me I spoke Norwegian very well. I told her so did she.

She was very friendly and down-to-earth, as her reputation suggested. She was a talented storyteller, and very patient with the crowd, especially with one woman who stood in line and asked her to autograph a stack of about 20 books.

That particular scene was exciting for me. I look forward to the day when some neurotic stalker freak shows up at one of my book signings with that many books for me to autograph.

After the event, as the princess and her entourage waited to leave for her next appearance in Tacoma, the owner of the Edmonds Theater offered the princess some popcorn. That’s when things got a little weird.

People started freaking out. “Oh my God!” they were squealing. “Look! LOOK!!! The Princess of Norway is eating POPCORN! HA! And she looks like she LIKES to eat popcorn!”

Reporters from the Norwegian press began jostling for position, snapping photographs of the princess eating popcorn. Märtha Louise took it all in stride.

It was at that moment I realized I am not cut out to be a princess. I happen to be a lover of popcorn myself. I eat it frequently. If I could not go out in the world and eat popcorn without the paparazzi hounding me, I think I would snap. I would throw my popcorn at them. If that didn’t deter them, I would then whack them over the head with my book.

My book will be paperback. The princess’s book is hardback. Now I understand why.

Dave you’re right, it would take a lot of cutting to make you into a princess, but what worried me was that maybe The Princess really hates popcorn? She cannot complain, protocol forbids that. She is also probably more used to a bit more refined cuisine, but hey; when in Rome do as the Romans!
