Travel Journaling Exercise: Retire Your Inner Censor – Part One

By Dave Fox

[Before doing this exercise, read the article about Eluding Your Inner Censor.]

My Inner Censor is a nervous little guy with frazzled hair and panicky wide eyes. He keeps his arms spread apart like a soccer goalie, trying to stop anything from getting past him.

What does your Inner Censor look like? Is it male or female? (It doesn’t have to be the same sex as you!) How big is your Inner Censor? What is its personality like? Does he have a name?

Draw a picture of your Inner Censor. You don’t have to be a great artist. After all, this is a course about writing. But draw your Inner Censor anyway. You can use a pen or pencil, magic markers, even watercolors if you like. Whatever you do, use a regular sized sheet of paper — nothing fancy. You’ll see why shortly.

When you’re finished with your artwork, set it aside for a moment, and move on to Part 2 of this exercise.
